Vicki and I had the pleasure of seeing Tower of Power ... the greatest horn band on the planet ... at The House of Blues in Cleveland, Ohio April 3rd ... Tower of Power! What a magnificent treat! Vicki had never seen Tower of Power. Adolfo Acosta and Iron Mike Bogart are both stellar Lead and Jazz players as well as Maynard Ferguson Big Bop Nouveau alumni. The show was a solid 90 minutes of TIGHT ... ENERGETIC funk and soul music. The band was awesome as usual and very entertaining. Many older musical selections were performed as well as a couple of brand new ones from a forth coming recording.
For the gear heads ... from where we were standing (and we were within five feet), Mike was playing his Eric Miyashiro Custom Model 8340EM Professional Yamaha Trumpet and an Eric Miyashiro Custom Yamaha mouthpiece. Adolfo was playing his Yamaha Professional Model 8310Z Bobby Shew Trumpet and what looked to be a Yamaha Shew Lead mouthpiece. Both trumpet players were having a blast and they played extremely well together and as soloist throughout the evening. It was fun watching Mike simultaneously juggling his trumpet, valve trombone and flugelhorn. These guys are stellar performers and just awed the packed venue of rabid Tower of Power fans.
Tower of Power is celebrating their 40th Anniversary this August in Oakland, California as well as releasing a CD of brand new material and a CD of previously vaulted material! Get out and see this outstanding horn band if they appear nearby. There is good reason they have been around for 40 years! Those of you who have never seen Tower of Power in concert will be absolutely blown away! Adolfo and Mike ... you got something really special goin on ... keep it up and keep having fun!

Lead Trumpet gear recommendations. Having owned a Bach Stradivarius, large-bore Benge, two Holton ST-307 "MF" Horns, a Schilke S-42, B-1 and X-3 and a Wayne Bergeron Kanstul ... I am now very happy with my Eric Miyashiro designed Yamaha 8340EM Professional Model Trumpet that my wife bought for me last year as a birthday present. I have also recently played the Yamaha Wayne Bergeron LA Model Trumpet as well as the Bobby Shew 8310Z Professional Models Trumpet. I really liked the 8310Z ... the Bergeron Yamaha is a fabulous horn; however, like the Kanstul Bergeron Model .. just a tad heavy for me as I prefer a heavier mouthpiece. You cannot go wrong with a Yamaha Trumpet, Schilke Trumpet or well tested Bach trumpet. My preference is Yamaha at the moment. The Eric Miyashiro 8340EM Professional Model Trumpet is made in Yamahas Custom Shop in Tokyo, Japan. It is a dual-bore horn and can accomodate whatever air you can put through it. If you favor a larger bore lead trumpet ... this is a serious trumpet to consider. If you like a little tighter feel like a medium bore trumpet or smaller ... take the Bobby Shew 8310Z Professional Trumpet for a test drive. If you a huge Bach fan ... try the Yamaha Wayne Bergeron Professional Model Trumpet. Presently, I am enamored with the Marcinkiewicz E-14 Concert Hall Trumpet Mouthpiece. I have played on a Monette Light-weight lead piece for several years but wanted to try the Bobby Shew E-14 in a Concert Hall Model as I prefer a heavier blank. It is a killer mouthpiece. If you have a Marcinkiewicz Lead Trumpet mouthpiece ... I highly recommend getting the mouthpiece in a Concert Hall Model. You will notice a difference in your tone in the lower register, you will experience greater volumn and projection as well. This piece works particularly well with my Eric Miyashiro 8340EM Yamaha Trumpet as it is a light-weight trumpet.
